You know that feeling when a quiet week reads like a verdict?

Nothing went wrong, exactly. You did the work. You showed up. But there is nothing to point at. No result, no visible movement, no proof. And by Sunday night a small voice has decided the quiet means something. Stalling. Slipping. Falling behind people you have never even met.

I want to name what is actually happening in that moment, because it is not failure.

It is a category error.

The destination tone

Somewhere along the way, we started expecting every chapter of a life to carry the tone of the destination.

Steady, if you have supposedly arrived. Triumphant, if you have just leapt.

So when a season shows up that is simply quiet, or slow, or unglamorous and in-between, it does not register as a season. It registers as evidence against you.

Most of the anxiety in a transition is not the transition. It is misnaming the season you are in, and then defaulting to the most alarming interpretation available. A quiet season reads as stalling. A slow one reads as failure. A season with no visible proof yet reads as proof of the opposite.

I didn’t have language for this until I built a rough map for myself: four seasons instead of a straight line.

The Season Map

I made this ‘Season Map’ during a year when almost everything in my life was moving at once: work, home, who I thought I was becoming.
