The disconnect on your identity after leaving a job title is real! You’re doing the hard work of building something that doesn’t 100% fit the premade boxes, and that’s awesome.

I’ve landed on stay-at-home mom for myself, ignoring some of the nuances I hear in the back of my mind, so maybe trying to find a label in general is a really hard thing.

Also you are making the money — I’m still trying to figure that piece out so cheers to you for paying the rent! I’m sure plenty of us don’t even make it that far.

Thank you for sharing this, Mizuho!! This really means a lot to me. I didn’t really have many people to talk to about this, so writing about it became a bit of a solace for me 🥹

I love how you’re fully owning and claiming “stay-at-home mom” for yourself. That’s admirable in its own right. The labelling, or lack of it, is something I’m still learning to embrace too, because sometimes we just don’t fit neatly into one category.

And thank you for your kind words about the money side! There are definitely days where I still feel uncertain about whether what I’m building is actually sustainable, so I don’t always feel as at ease with it. Rooting for you and your journey, I believe you can do it! ✨

I used to tell people I was a work at home mom bc I homeschool my son. Thing is, I have people give me the eye roll or the “must be nice to stay at home and not have to work!”

Women are literally in a position where we can’t win. If we stay at home to raise our children we are spoiled or lazy because we don’t work and bring in money. If we do work we are considered bad mothers bc that means we are neglecting our children and making a daycare or nanny raise our kids.

So I like that work at home mom or freelancer. That’s what I use.

Makes sense! You are doing really hard work at home!!!

I know what you mean. I’m basically just starting over again so I’m trying to figure everything out. I used to have the nice glass tower corner office job years ago but unforeseen circumstances forced me back to the bottom.

Now I’m starting over and do book reviews for chump change and free books to read. I’m trying to figure out how to make more money of course with other streams of income.

I’m just working day by day back up the ladder. 🪜 hopefully I won’t get thrown off again.

I just tell people I’m a book reviewer and freelancer

Thank youuu for relating 😭💕 this means so much... And I love that you’re still finding a way to build something from where you are now, even if it looks very different from the glass tower corner office days.

Also, the “I’m a book reviewer and freelancer” sounds pretty damn good to me! 😂📚 I love how you are owning it! Something I am still working on. I’m rooting for you and all the different income streams you’re figuring out along the way. One day at a time! 🪜✨

Thank you!!!! You are one of the FIRST people who actually encouraged me about this. You have NO idea how down I have been for the last 15 years. I have NEVER stopped trying to make money doing something.

Whether it was doing several at home businesses (and I tried a few), to SEO marketing and digital marketing. I have tried FB marketing and content creation. I have even done baking on the side.

I do sell beadable items on the side and so far i would say I’m about even on that..I haven’t put anything online because I am completely broke.

I have done games and surveys and I will admit, I have made some with a few different apps. Enough to buy presents here or there, supplies, etc.

Of course to the outside world I’m just lazy and lie on the couch playing on my phone all day. You wouldn’t believe the things that are being said about me. Oh I used to defend myself but I just stopped and let people talk.

Now I’m simply trying to learn everything I can to be able to create something worthwhile. I go one day at a time and just hope no one throws me off the ladder again.

I’ve been told my experience needs to be told. So maybe it’s time my invisible pain turns into power.

Thank youuu for sharing Wynonna!! Reading this means so much to me and I am with you for the challenges you feel 🥹

Fifteen years of trying, experimenting, learning and starting again is not laziness. It’s persistence, even if it hasn’t always looked the way other people think “success” should look.

And I really hope you do tell your story. There is so much power in being able to look back and say, “I tried this, and this, and this, and I’m still here.”

I can tell you have learned a lot along the way. And I feel there are so many people who can quietly relate to this but feel ashamed because their attempts haven’t translated into the shiny success story we’re constantly shown online.

That’s exactly the kind of conversation I want to have here. Keep going one day at a time. And maybe that ladder doesn’t have to be the one everyone else told you to climb. Genuinely rooting for you and excited for your journey ahead!! 🌱✨💕

Somehow, I always felt like a salary paycheck was, more or less, showing up money. It said, "You played the game for another two weeks." Money I made of my own volition was somehow sweeter. It spent the same but just felt better.

Yes it really does feel like that doesn't it! And become more appreciative of your own work made by your own two hands too

Love how design is still a strong part of your stack. And your skillsets make you much more income resilient! I’m sure your writing will grow alongside everything else too.
